Macular Degeneration: What You Need to Know

When it comes to protecting your long-term vision, one condition deserves a spotlight: Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

AMD is the leading cause of vision loss in adults over 50—and it often starts silently. No pain. No early warning signs. Just a slow, subtle decline in the sharp, central vision you rely on for driving, reading, and recognizing faces.

That’s why early detection through a comprehensive eye exam is so important. And that’s also why February is AMD Awareness Month—the perfect time to learn how to protect your vision for the future.

What Is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration is a chronic eye disease that affects the macula, the part of your retina responsible for detailed central vision.

There are two types:

  1. Dry AMD: The most common form, caused by thinning of the macula and accumulation of drusen (waste deposits).
  2. Wet AMD: Less common but more aggressive, caused by abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage under the retina.

Both types can cause irreversible central vision loss if left untreated.

Early Symptoms to Watch For

AMD doesn’t usually cause symptoms in the early stages. But as it progresses, you may notice:

  • Blurred or distorted vision
  • Trouble reading or recognizing faces
  • Straight lines that appear wavy
  • Difficulty seeing in low light
  • A dark or empty spot in your central vision

These signs may appear slowly—but when they do, it’s critical to seek care immediately.

Who’s at Risk?

You may be at higher risk for AMD if you:

  • Are over 60
  • Have a family history of AMD
  • Smoke or have smoked
  • Have high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease
  • Eat a low-antioxidant diet
  • Spend long hours in sunlight without UV protection
  • How We Detect Macular Degeneration

At Sokol Advanced EyeCare, we perform comprehensive eye exams that include:

  • Retinal imaging (no dilation needed in many cases)
  • OCT scans to detect thinning or swelling of the macula
  • Risk assessments based on lifestyle, diet, and family history
  • Concentration testing of vital antioxidants

Early detection gives you more treatment options—and a better chance at preserving your vision.

Can You Prevent or Slow Macular Degeneration?

While there’s no cure for AMD, there’s good news: you can possibly slow its progression with the right lifestyle and nutrition changes.

Here’s what we recommend:

Take the Right Nutritional Supplements

We offer MacuHealth, a triple carotenoid supplement (lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin) that nourishes the macula and supports long-term retinal health. It’s backed by clinical research and recommended for those with risk factors or early signs of AMD.

Eat for Your Eyes

Focus on antioxidant-rich, colorful foods:

  • Leafy greens (spinach, kale, collards)
  • Orange and yellow vegetables (sweet potatoes, carrots, peppers)
  • Berries, citrus, and dark grapes
  • Omega-3-rich fish like salmon and sardines
  • Nuts and seeds for vitamin E and zinc

Wear Sunglasses Outdoors

UV and blue light exposure can accelerate macular damage. We carry designer eyewear with full UV protection and blue-light filters for digital devices.

Schedule Regular Eye Exams

If you’re over 50—or younger with risk factors—an annual exam can catch subtle macular changes before vision loss occurs.

Macular degeneration may be common, but it’s not inevitable. With the right care, nutrition, and early detection, you can protect your eyes for years to come.
