When to Seek Medical Attention
Eye emergencies can include chemical injuries, infections, sudden flashes and floaters, and punctures and scratches. Each of these can have varying symptoms.
Common signs of an eye emergency can include:
- Eye pain
- Loss of vision
- Bleeding from the eye
- New or severe headaches
These are just some of the signs of an eye emergency, and it’s important to seek medical attention as soon as possible when dealing with an eye emergency.
Different Types of Eye Emergencies
Eye emergencies do not fall under one set category. Understanding the different types of eye emergencies that can occur can help you handle them in the moment before you visit us for emergency eye care.
Chemical Eye Injuries
Chemical eye injuries can occur from routine cleaning and chores around the house or at work. Droplets or sprays from cleaning products, gardening products, and industrial chemicals can accidentally get in your eyes and cause an emergency.
If you get chemicals in your eyes, the following steps can help prevent severe damage:
- Wash your hands with soap and cool water thoroughly.
- Turn your head, so the affected eye is down and to the side.
- Hold the affected eyelid open and flush it the eye with clean tap water for 15 minutes.
A chemical eye injury can cause severe damage—seeking medical attention as soon as possible is vital.
Scratches & Punctures
A cut or scratch to your eyeball or eyelid can indicate a need for urgent medical care. Your eyes are sensitive to trauma, so applying a loose bandage in the moment while you wait for medical treatment is crucial.
It’s essential not to apply too much pressure.
Similarly, with a puncture, getting urgent medical care as soon as possible is the priority.
Flashes & Floaters
Sudden floaters accompanied by flashes can be a cause for concern. As you age, occasional flashes may become more regular, but the appearance of new random flashes should be checked by your eye doctor immediately.
Floaters appear as small lines or cobwebs in your field of vision, and flashes appear as flashing lights in your field of vision.
Most flashes and floaters aren’t severe, but you should contact us right away if:
- A gray curtain covers part of your vision
- You notice many new floaters
- You have an increased amount of flashes
- A shadow appears in your peripheral vision
Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, can sometimes qualify as an eye emergency. Conjunctivitis occurs when there is an inflammation or infection of the transparent membrane that lines the eyelid.
In some cases, conjunctivitis can be contagious and result in eye discomfort and severe redness.
Some common signs and symptoms of pink eye can include:
- A gritty feeling in your eyes
- Tearing in the affected eye
- A pus-like discharge
If you suspect your have conjunctivitis, contact us for emergency eye care.
